  • taking a chance on something. Origin: Steven Brody, who reportedly had jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge in 1886 and survived the fall. Hence the meaning....of taking a big chance. It is clear that it is a local colloquiallism in Philly....whether or not it is widespread I do not know. I use the term myself. It's clear that the original slang has morphed in meaning -- now referencing taking -- as in stealing.
I took a brody on the bottle of brandy. (Meaning he bought it without tasting it.)
