Definition of us

us

noun

  • me. It is a strange inversion of the British Head of State's use of "we" to essentially mean "I". When the queen says: "We are not amused" she means "I am not happy" not the whole of the Commonwealth; it is the Monarch's symbolic way of "speaking for the people". Nowadays, even cheeky Prime Ministers sometimes use it. In certain parts of north England people use the first person plural object pronoun instead of the subject pronoun. Thus, "Give it to us" can mean either "Give it to me" or have the normal grammatical sense.
