garbage in, garbage out

  • Phrase used to indicate that the value of the output is a direct result of the value of the input. (Used almost exclusively in instances in which the output was undesirable or useless.) Origin: the Information Technology industry.
    Person A: I got an F on my Research paper.

    Person B: Well, you used poor sources. Garbage in, garbage out.
