verb

  • to kill time.
    We can just peter around by the harbor until we have to get back on the ship.
    Doing nothing of any significant value.
    Since retiring, Bill spends his day petering about the house trying to find something to occupy himself with.
    To take an excessive amount of time in completing something.
    Quit petering around and get that project finished or we will not get paid on time.
