- To dumb down something, or to dumb something down means to put it into simpler, easier terms so that someone who isn't as well educated on the subject can understand. It usually applies to an explanation. One "dumbs down" an explanation.
It likely comes from the idea that if you have to "dumb it down," then the person you are giving an explanation to is too dumb to understand the more complex explanation, and you have to lower your explanation to their intellectual level.Last edited on Jun 19 2017.
