noun - uncountable

  • old or distressed clothing one wears to work in an environment that may be dirty or wet but that does not merit use of coveralls or protective gear.
    I wore my grubbies when I volunteered at the school carwash.

  • A present or former convict. Derivation: Prisoners "on the yard" typically don't have a lot to do, so they spend a lot of time standing around in little groups, working out their social issues. Someone was reminded of chickens in the farmyard, perhaps.
    That place employs so many yardbirds, it's like little Attica.
