Pronounced "lehn" Old English word for line was pronounced "lee-nay", the second vowel effected the first vowel causing "lee" to shift to "leh". This irregularity also contrasts with the phonetic positioning of the plural -s, causing the irregular to become contrast-sounding, the irregular form also makes the word more agressifive sounding while the plural -s causes words to sound more passizive. Therefore there are differences in the expressions of the regular and irregular forms, the irregular form provides a more self-oriented mood than the regular plural -s.
