to be excessively nerdy, anti-social, unpopular comes from Japanese word meaning "house." Probably coined because of a nerd's habit of never leaving his/her house

a Japanese word used to describe a person obsessed with a certain thing. (usually used for manga or anime)
She's a complete otaku; she's always reading manga!
