whodi

noun

  • friend. Pronounced "hood-ee" or "whoa-dee."
We're from the same hood (aka neighborhood). He's my whodi.
(by Joe Gervais of Saint Paul MN, Jun 22, 2011)
See that dude? He's my whodi.

notes

  • Most likely an extension of the word hood; but in reference to a person, "whodi" sounds like hood-ee -- making "whodi" the ebonic spelling (i.e. "hoo" sounds like "who"; so, hood becomes "whod", and "ee" becomes "i" -- thus, hood-ee becomes "whod-i"). Ebonics spelling reference: "w" is usually added whenever possible; see spelling and definition of dawg. (by Joe Gervais from Saint Paul, MN -- June 22, 2011)

Possibly from New Orleans which is divided into areas called "wards." "Whodi" is then "wardee", i.e. a person from one's ward.
