a person who is placed between friend and girlfriend -- a person who cannot identify as one's girlfriend but cannot identify as one's friend. The word originated from the uneasy phrase, "um... friend?" and putting the two words together.
"Hey, guys, I'm Derek, Sarah's... um... friend."
