- Where I was a kid in Southeastern Michigan in the late 1970's in high school, a "grit" was a kid who was part of the "tough" group. Smoking cigarettes, dress slovenly, likely smoked marijuana, girls would wear shirts showing bare midriff. That sort of thing. They likely were also part of the group that we called "burnouts." LOL. Hilarious stuff.
