adjective

  • a pre-release product that is released for testing.
    They call all of its products beta in order to deflect criticism.
    We have a few products in beta at the moment.

  • characterized by a lack of "manliness," confidence, or bravado. The opposite of alpha.

Big Room, the

origin

  • According to the stereotype, computer aficionados are loath to go outside. When someone mentions the outdoors, a computing fan may respond with, "What's that?" Answers vary depending on the time of day. For example:

    "Oh, it's the big room with the blue ceiling with that really bright light."

    "Oh, it's the big room with the black ceiling with all those tiny little lights."

bit bucket

noun

  • the place where all deleted, lost, or misdirected data goes to.
    I emailed you my status update yesterday. It must have landed in the bit bucket.
    Please direct all flames to the bit bucket.

bit rot

noun - uncountable

  • a hypothetical disease that causes programs to run more poorly over time and causes documents to become corrupted. Assuming no actual data loss, bits don't actually rot, but rather assumptions that programs have made will change, as will the editor / viewer programs for documents.

  • to kill, usually with a firearm.
    She is going to blow him away!
