mind (one's) P's and Q's

  • Watch one's manners.
Now all of you remember to mind your p's and q's.

  • to pay attention.

In Olde England, your bar tab was a chalk board with your name, P's (pints) and Q's (quarts), to be paid at the end of the evening. If you got lit, and your bar keep was shifty, you could drink P's and get charged for Q's. So, mind your P's and Q's!
