origin
- Wild donkeys and burros will, for lack of other forage, eat prickly pear cactus. In order to bite bits off the cactus pad, they pull their lips as far out of the way as possible to avoid getting them stuck by the spines. This gives them the appearance of grinning.

- Where I was a kid in Southeastern Michigan in the late 1970's in high school, a "grit" was a kid who was part of the "tough" group. Smoking cigarettes, dress slovenly, likely smoked marijuana, girls would wear shirts showing bare midriff. That sort of thing. They likely were also part of the group that we called "burnouts." LOL. Hilarious stuff.
