  • a safe, till, or cash box. From "Peter". Predominant use in 1920's through 1940's. Sometimes also used to refer to a prison cell or a courtroom witness box.
    I'm known for taking petes.
    I'm the best pete man in the country.

  • Pete Best was the Beatles drummer in the years just prior to their breakthrough in the record industry. He was abruptly fired on the eve of their first Parlophone recording session. Ringo Starr was hired in his place. Every musician lives in fear of "getting the Pete Best" to this day.

  • to kill time.
    We can just peter around by the harbor until we have to get back on the ship.
    Doing nothing of any significant value.
    Since retiring, Bill spends his day petering about the house trying to find something to occupy himself with.
    To take an excessive amount of time in completing something.
    Quit petering around and get that project finished or we will not get paid on time.
