H

happy camper

noun

origin

  • Evolved from a line delivered by Chevy Chase in the movie Vacation. Made more popular after US Vice President Dan Quayle foolishly used it in an address during a visit to American Samoa.
''You all look like happy campers to me,'' he told the Samoans. ''Happy campers you are, happy campers you have been, and, as far as I am concerned, happy campers you will always be.''

-- "Washington Talk: White House", The New York Times, Maureen Dowd, April 28, 1989
