  • To be off the front in bicycle racing means that you have jumped ahead of the main pack of riders. Similarly, to be off the back means that you have dropped behind the pack. Hence, elsewhere in life, off the front means to be ahead of schedule or doing a good job and off the back means the opposite.
    Did you get the clutch for my car yet? No, man--I'm off the back on that.
