  • to overcome, to conquer.
    Dude, I totally tanked that quantum mechanics test.
    If used reflexively, may take on opposite meaning, as in:
    Dude, that quantum mechanics test has me so tanked.

  • Something that is broken, a person who is in a hopeless situation. When used to describe a person there are connotations of an unfair situation. Originated in hacker/tech culture to describe a piece of hardware that was broken.

  • a metaphorical area that contains the underlying implementation of something - e.g. a piece of hardware, a piece of software, an idea, etc.
    Let's now look under the hood to see how the software goes about transmitting data so quickly.
    To understand how it really works we need to look under the hood.
    Does your excursion call for more power than the 173-horsepower four-cylinder under the hood?
