  • One hypothesis is that the term comes from the region of southern Illinois known as "Little Egypt." One of its towns is Cairo. It is far away from Chicago both geographically and culturally.

    Hypothesis for etymology: From "Desperates", Cockney rhyming slang from the cartoon character Desperate Dan. He was a huge, amiable but very stupid man with a large chin whose favorite food was cow pie, complete with horns and tail poking out of the piecrust.
