- the extremely bushy, unkempt facial hair seen on many old-school Unix hackers. Often worn as a badge of honor, since the length of one's Unix beard is considered directly proportional to the owner's expertise.
The Unix beard has fallen out of favor with many younger programmers who now work at hip tech start-ups, but old-school hackers can still be identified by their mangy Unix beards.
