- adjective. Of a job, requiring one's presence only from 9am to 5pm. Used in contrast to a more demanding job, for example being the CEO of a large corporation or owning a business.
You should not consider starting your own business if you don't have a great idea, and the willingness to work much harder to make it happen than you would at a nine to five job.

- crazy, irrational. Note: theorized that the term is a vague allusion to the "jack-in-the-box" toys, a box containing a head mounted on a spring that would pop open after a crank had been turned. The head would then bounce around. The unpredictable motion of the toy could be likened to someone who is "out of the box."
